Skeletons and candles are two of the oldest vintage Halloween decorations. The ancient druids, Celtic fortune tellers of their day, dressed in animal heads and skins to do so. That, coupled with the fact that Halloween signifies the return of departed souls, evolved into the association of skeletons with Halloween. Candles have long been used in helping welcome or guide the dead during that night in hollowed-out pumpkins, known as jack-o-lanterns. Since the holiday is also directly related with the passing of Autumn into Winter, it makes sense that leaves, trees, and creeping spiders also represent Halloween. Through the passing of the centuries and cultures, the superstition of black cats being bad luck, witches, and ghosts have gradually become part of what we know as this spooky day of Halloween.
