Sailor Halloween costumes are found at Halloween specialty stores, costume and theatrical shops, and military supply stores. For those that want to create their own costumes, the basic sailor uniform is relatively easy to put together.
The sailor's uniform generally consists of a top, trousers, collar, hat, and black shoes. This uniform is the most recognizable, and typically white in color. This is the summer service uniform, and the winter uniform is navy blue. The majority of sailor Halloween costumes based on the classic naval service uniform are white with blue or red accents. Most sailor Halloween costumes include a top and pants, but there is also the top and skirt or dress combo, for the ladies.
The sailor's uniform is relatively easy to put together without purchasing an entire outfit. Obtain a white shirt, white pants with wide legs, and a blue or white square of fabric to make the collar. Top this costume off with a sailor's hat. If you don't have a sailor's hat, use a white fishing cap, with the brim turned up, instead.
For those looking to obtain authentic sailor uniforms, visit military outfitters that sell to the general public. There are also specialty shops that sell vintage sailor's uniforms. Many of these shops will rent these uniforms out to customers, as well. Call ahead to see what's in the store's inventory, and expect that you will have to go in to try on the uniform to make sure that you get the right size.
Add a special touch to the sailor costume with a temporary naval tattoo on the arm. If none are available, draw the tattoo on with makeup, or a washable marker.
