Halloween: The HistoryHalloween: The History Halloween: the history in symbols and what they mean is the focus of this article. The various symbols used throughout the Halloween season are interesting and full of history. And so we begin- Halloween: the history. Let's start with goblins. They were also called little people or fairy folk and French children were told that the goblins would get them if they were not careful. The goblins represented evil spirits that people believed came out at Samhain and then again on Halloween. The witch has an interesting history because her name comes from the Saxon word wica which means wise one. Magic is connected with witchcraft and some of the first magicians were like scientists who tried to understand and control the forces of nature. In Rome during ancient times the owl was a symbol of something that brought about evil. However, in Greece, the owl was considered sacred. During the Middle Ages Europeans were afraid of the owl because of its spooky stare and awful shrieking call and began to associate it with the witch. There are people today who are superstitious and think when they hear the call of the owl it means something bad will happen, even death. Halloween history places ghosts as spirits or souls of the dead. The English, Scotch and Irish thought that ghosts roamed about looking for places of warmth and happiness. On Samhain Eve people would keep their home fires burning and fill a table with food for the ghosts. If you did not do this the ghosts would be unhappy and steal children or the harvested food. A ghost might also destroy animals. Halloween is rich with history and symbols.
