You don't have to buy a Halloween costume to sport something fun and festive. This is also a great opportunity for kids to make their own costumes. Here are several free Halloween costume ideas:
Ladybug
Use a black marker to draw large black circles onto a red t-shirt. When you are satisfied with their placement, fill them in.
To make the wings, take apart three coat hangers. Attach the ends with duct tape to form a circle, then bend the wire into a heart shape. Cover the wire with red fabric, draw on black circles, and add two loops of elastic to slip over the shoulders. Adults: help small children to craft this free Halloween costume idea, as the coat hangers can cause injury.
Make the antennae by using pipe cleaners to form a headband.
Zombie
For that fresh out of the ground look, take some old clothes, shred them, and rub dirt into them. If you don't want to use dirt, brown paint works well.
Black Cat
If you have black fabric, a leotard, nylons, a headband, and some cardboard, you can make a black cat costume. Form a tail out of the black fabric, and stuff it with ticking, or fabric. If you have furry material on hand, that's even better. During cold nights outdoors, wear tights or leggings, instead of nylons.
Cut triangles from black cardboard, and attach them to a headband to make kitty ears. Cover them with fur or felt, if available.
Want to make your own makeup, fake blood, or zombie skin? Mix 2 Tbsp. of cornstarch with 1 Tbsp. of solid cooking shortening. Add drops of food coloring. Use baby powder to seal the makeup.
