It may be more economical for you to make your children's Halloween costume rather than buying it. It will depend, of course, on what they want to be this year, availability, and your own ability. Some might think that making a children's Halloween costume is easy, but kids these days can get some pretty elaborate ideas.
You should certainly price the desired costume in the store because some of them can get just as expensive to make as they are to buy. Surely you don't want to spend your time making something that you could buy for the same price. Only do this if you are very talented and think that you could make a major improvement over the store bought version. Your children's Halloween costume will probably only last the one Halloween so there is no reason to go broke for it.
If your child wants to be a specific character, say Bugs Bunny, then you can usually find patterns in most fabric stores to make the costume. But if they want to be, let's say, a rock star, then you can pick up pieces here and there at a discount store or even a thrift store.
If your children are older, make them a part of making the costume. It will give them something to be proud of and can be a great bonding experience for you and your child. Just have fun with the whole thing and enjoy each other's company for the holiday.
